Nepal Telecom is currently installing WiFi hotspots in the Kathmandu valley. Brought as a part of the Wimax project, 500 WiFi hotspots will be set up in different parts of the country for major hospitals, airports, malls, and VDCs as well.
It was told previously that the hotspot work would be immediately started after the launch of WiMax but it took nearly 8 months to just start the work. It is better late than never that the WiFi service will be commercially launched after some time.
Speaking to media in a press meet for NT data service, Nepal Telecom’s MD Amarth Nath Singh said the installation of Wifi hotspot is already completed in Tribhuvan International Airport and Teaching Hospital which is now available for free of charge. Later separate voucher will be available to buy for the Wifi service.
Due to the ubiquitous availability of WiFi in smartphones, tabs/pads, and laptops, this Wifi service will be popular among people who need the internet in such places. As per the people demand, Nepal Telecom should think of running a WiFi network not only in such places but also as a Wide area network in all areas.
Update 2020: Though Nepal Telecom had installed the WiFi in several happening places of the country, the service is still not available in all the major public places until 2020. But, recently they have floated their plan to launch WiFi service in all the ward offices of the country. As they have increased their 4G coverage, they will be using the 4G technology to provide such WiFi service in the ward offices.
In another news, Everest Link, a remote WiFi service provider had got the contract to launch Free WiFi service in the Everest Base camp (EBC). Worldlink is the largest provider of such public WiFi networks in Nepal, including those WiFi hotspots in Kathmandu.
