Till the last day of submitting the application for Nepal Telecom’s MD position, it is known that 13 applicants have submitted their application. Out of which 9 of them are from within the company. As the tenure of current MD Mr. Buddhi Prasad Acharya is going to be complete on Bhadra 20, the MD selection process has started.
KP Oli Government has made a selection committee headed by the secretary of Ministry of information and communication (MOIC), Mr. Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya, which had announced the vacancy with 21 days deadline to submit the application from the prospective candidates. It is known that the committee will shortlist 6 applicants and interview them. After the interview, the committee will be recommending 3 personnel to the cabinet and ultimately the new cabinet will appoint one among them.
The applicants for the Nepal Telecom MD are known to be the current MD Mr. Buddhi Prasad Acharya, Chief Technical officer Mrs. Kamini Raj Bhandari, Chief Human Resource Officer Mr. Rabindra Jha, Company Secretariat Gokarna Prasad Sitaula, and Managers Mr. Matukananda Baidhya, Mr. Sunil Kumar Pokharel, Mrs. Pratima Pradhan, Mr. Raju Babu Aryal and Mrs. GunaKeshari Pradhan. All these 9 applicants are Senior Managerial staffs within Nepal Telecom. The 3 applicants from outside the company are Dipak Raj Joshi, Anil Kumar Jha, Madan Kharel and Nagendra Jha.
Among the 9 of the applicants from within the company, six of them are from a technical background who are namely Bhandari, Jha, Baidhya, Pokharel, Pratima and Gunakeshari, 5 of them are Telecom Engineers whereas one of them Mr. Sunil Pokharel is Civil Engineer.
The MD selection committee formed by Government includes Mr. Dinesh Thapaliya (secretary of MOIC) as the head, Mr. Narayan Prasad Sanjel, Mr. Kabiraj Khanal, Nepal Telecom’s former MD Mr. Amar Nath Singh and National Information Technology council member Mr. Basant Ban.
The old TOR for Nepal Telecom’s MD (formed as a result of protest from Nepal Telecom Technical group) included educational qualification to be Telecom engineer with Masters degree in Management, which is changed by two governments to any personnel having masters degree in many streams (like Development, Management, Commerce, Economics, Business Administration, IT or engineering). There is also a provision to give an extra 3 points to the applicants from within the company, as a gesture to encourage competitive personnel within the company to be the MD.
Based on the selection committee recommendation and their evaluation, Government will appoint the MD for their biggest company with 3 years tenure in the first round which could be extended to 2 years more based on his/her performance. The salary of Nepal Telecom MD is termed to be Rs 2 Lakh (0.2 million rupees).
