Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has launched free WiFi in Kathmandu in six locations. The areas for free Wifi now include some of the religious and tourist places in Kathmandu. Find the locations, impact and sustainability of free Wifi in Kathmandu.
KMC starts the free Wifi in those 6 locations from Sunday (Bhadra 17, 2018). The locations for the free Wifi in Kathmandu are:
- Hanumandhoka
- Pashupati Nath
- Shoyambhu Nath
- Boudha Nath
- Balaju Baishdhara Park
- Sankha Park
KMC has partnered with Worldlink to set up the free Wifi. While launching the free Wifi, KMC Mayor Mr. Bidhya Sundar Shakya has expressed that works to develop Kathmandu as Smart city will be done rapidly. He even said that they will associate with the private sector for the Smart city works.
All of the equipment and internet connection are managed by Worldlink. The mobiles that have opened wifi connection in those areas will get the free Wifi automatically. They are going to provide 30 minutes of free WiFi per day per Wifi hotspot. After using for 30 minutes, the mobile cannot connect to the Wifi Access point in that location. Whereas they can connect Wifi AP in another location.
As per their plan, KMC will gradually increase the no of access points in Kathmandu to 60 such areas. They could prioritize Government offices, Hospitals, Airports, bus parks where more people gather.
Impact of Free wifi and sustainability
We would like to congratulate KMC and Worldlink for this successful project. Hope the free Wifi will have a significant impact to increase the adoption of digital information in that locations. The free Wifi service will now facilitate tourists and pilgrimage in those areas. The expansion of such free wifi zones will help more people and ensure the basic digital connectivity. Provided the cost of regular maintenance and leisure people’s demand for high bandwidth multimedia content, we can still question the sustainability of free Wifi service.
