China shipped over 19 million 5G phones in October 2022. The figure represented 80.1 percent of the country’s total mobile phone shipment, the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) reported.
During the period, around 19.52 million units of 5G mobile handsets were sold. The 5G smartphone ecosystem is growing at an accelerating speed and China is increasingly becoming a key market. As the number of 5G phones reached 20 million, the period also saw 20 new brands of 5G phone models released in the country. Again, it was a year-on-year increase of 25 percent in the same data from 2021.
China is home to the world’s many popular smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Vivo, OPPO, realme, etc. Likewise, the country’s domestic brands remained ahead in the shipment in the phone market. In total, Chinese smartphone brands shipped 16.8 million 5G handsets which accounted for 60 percent of China’s total phone shipments in the same period.

5G phones shipment in China reached 173 million by October 2022
China’s 5G mobile phone shipment topped 173 million in the first 10 months till October 2022. Although it was down by 17.7 percent from the same period in 2021.
The rise in 5G handsets is also backed up by China’s large network of 5G base stations. The country had 2.2 million 5G cell towers by September 2022 which accounts for 60 percent of 5G towers worldwide.
As the 5G ecosystem continues to draw in encouraging numbers, China’s ambition to lead the next-generation cellular technology gains more momentum as it attempts to leave behind competitors around the world. 5G is growing at a rapid pace across the world with many states aggressively launching, expanding, and innovating 5G technologies.

Nepal waits for 5G start
At the same time, Nepal is nearing the start of a 5G revolution in the telecom industry. Nepal Telecom (NTC) is soon starting its 5G trial in Kathmandu. After running internal tests on some 5G compatible handsets, it will switch on the elusive network in some parts of the capital. The operator canceled its scheduled January start of the 5G trial citing a lack of internal testing.
