Nepal Telecom has started an anti-online-scam ringback tone (RBT). The company collaborated with the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office to raise awareness against online fraudulent behaviors. The initiative was taken after the cases of online scams continued to mount in the capital.
Scammers are using social media and the internet to lure people into their sinister designs. Using fake posts containing links, they provoke unsuspecting users to click on them which does the “trick”.
Mostly, these posts end up seeking users’ personal information such as bank accounts, or asking for a login to win something. The easier access to the internet and smartphones has also made it easy for scammers to reach out to a vast number of targets.

“Through Facebook, Viber, IMO, WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok, scammers are faking parcels, lottery, and other wins for their targets. Some of them are falsely claiming to work for digital wallets and are seeking OTP codes, asking to exchange USD with Nepali currency, and also swindling in the pretext of foreign employment.” Learn: How to Subscribe and Unsubscribe Caller Tunes CRBT in Ntc?
Ntc has asked the users in its RBT to be aware of such false assurances and illegal activities and not share OTP, PIN codes, and any security codes with strangers to stay safe from possible scams.
The anti-online-scam ringback tone is only for Ntc numbers right now. Users of Ntc and Ncell can hear this tone while calling an Ntc number. However, it is not possible to use this RBT on an Ncell number.
The Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office is working to use the same type of RBT for Ncell numbers too.
