Viber starts the NDRRMA channel to enhance safety during the monsoon with reliable information
The NDRRMA channel is a critical resource at the community level which enables people to make decisions to protect themselves and their families, friends, and neighbors with accurate information. Especially in areas where traditional communication is less reliable or damaged, the Viber channel could be most fruitful.
Recently Viber and NDRRMA conducted a simulation to support the channel’s launch. This involved the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), the National Emergency Operation Centre, local Chief District Officer representatives, and volunteers. The demonstration highlighted how the channel could be utilized during natural emergencies. It showed that the channel can be helpful in facilitating rapid and efficient response efforts.
Dr. Bhisma Kumar Bhusal, Joint Secretary at MoHA, highlighted the importance of the exercise, “Simulations like these help us streamline communication between departments, making the response time quicker and more efficient.”
“A significant step towards enhancing public safety in Nepal …”
David Tse, Senior Director for APAC at Rakuten Viber, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “This partnership with NDRRMA is a significant step towards enhancing public safety in Nepal. By leveraging our platform, we aim to provide crucial, real-time information to the public, helping them stay safe during the monsoon season and, hopefully, beyond.”
Dr. Dijan Bhattarai, Spokesperson and Information officer at NDRRMA added, “This channel is a valuable tool in our ongoing efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response. Now that we have a platform with Viber, we can reach a wider audience, making sure everyone has access to information they need during emergencies.”
Viber continues to remain a prominent messaging app in Nepal. However, the company’s services extend beyond instant messaging such as commitment to sports, travel, and food. The NDRRMA channel is its latest effort to make emergency response information more reliable, accessible, and efficient and help contribute to a safer and more resilient society.
