TikTok’s impact is extremely huge on data consumption. The recent surge in data use in Nepal Telecom (NTC also NT) is a direct testament. It’s emerged that NTC saw its internet bandwidth usage increase by 100 Gbps a day after the TikTok ban was reversed in Nepal.
The company’s Managing Director Sangita Pahadi shared that NT’s data surged by a huge 100 Gbps after TikTok started running again. According to MD Pahadi, the milestone took place on Saturday, Bhadra 22 (September 07), just a day after Nepal Telecom officially reestablished access to TikTok on its network. Pahadi was speaking to Techpana sharing the details.
It’s also great news for telecom companies in terms of both bandwidth usage and revenue generation. After the ban, cache servers were out of use while users took to VPNs to use the app. It compromised bandwidth for telcos while data pack subscription was also affected adversely. NT can now relax that TikTok is back and is playing a role for the company in positive aspects.
Companies like NT and Ncell provide data packs for internet browsing including dedicated social media packs. Ncell has launched a TikTok pack with unlimited 7-day access. Users also buy NTC data packs to browse the app. Therefore, data packs are vital for the company’s revenue generation.

NTC sees its internet bandwidth increase massively thanks to TikTok
Before the TikTok ban in Kartik 27 2080, TikTok was consuming 200 Gbps of data in Ntc’s wireless network. But now, TikTok has already contributed to a 50% more bandwidth increase for the company. The MD said that it would take a few days for the app to consume the same amount of bandwidth a year ago.
It’s worth knowing that although the government lifted the ban on TikTok on Thursday, Bhadra 06, 2081 (August 22, 2024). But officially, telecom companies and ISPs were able to enable access to the app beginning on Friday, Bhadra 21 (September 06).
NT MD Pahadi also shared that “Reversing the ban on TikTok is good in terms of data pack sales in the context of declining income due to OTT services.”
TikTok’s ban had affected companies’ revenues with Ncell publicly sharing that it lost Rs 1.5 billion in revenue after the video-sharing app was disabled in Nepal. But with KP Oli’s government reinstating TikTok, telecom operators are expecting its good effect on their businesses.
