A rollover Plan/pack (also called carry-over pack) in mobile service is quite common across the world. Especially as more subscribers resort to data and voice packs for their communication needs, rollover packs work as a significant value differentiation from the telco’s side. Ntc and Ncell have already started to adopt this rollover feature, which we shall discuss more in detail below.
What is a rollover pack in mobile service?
Rollover plan is a type of pack in which the remaining resource volume (talk time, data volume, or SMS) remains valid even after the expiry of the validity period. That means the remaining unused resource is carried over to the next period of the subscription. To illustrate, if you subscribe to a 25 GB data pack for 28 days. But you could only use 20 GB when it is expired. You didn’t use 5 GB of data. Normally, this data pack is unused and gone once the validity is reached. But with a rollover plan, the unused 5 GB data is added to the subsequently purchased data pack. Same is the case for any other voice, SMS or combo packs.
This is particularly useful when you cannot use the entire purchased pack volume which is also quite common. There are times that due to busy schedules or lack of network coverage and travel or less smartphone usage, we can’t use all the resources we buy in a pack. So being able to use the remaining data volume, talk time, or SMS in our next pack subscription works like a charm for all. YouTube and other video-sharing apps such as the TikTok which is currently banned in Nepal consume huge amounts of data. But even at times, our large volume data pack may not be used thoroughly. So, a rollover or carry-over pack is so useful in such a scenario.

Application
The rollover or carryover plan can be applied for both non-recurring and recurring data packs. For non-recurring, the telcos could set some conditions for the data plans to roll over. However, it is most likely they bring this rollover feature for the selected special packs: high value plans. And some operators also set the timeline for which the resources could be valid.

Rollover pack benefits
- Money is paid off: Having a rollover pack is money paid off. Since we can use all the resources we have bought, our money gets spent on the full volume of resources. So, unlike in a regular situation, we get what we pay in a strictly literal sense. And this may even result in cost savings for the customer as they could end up buying more resources or high-priced plans.
- Greater user experience: What’s so captivating about a rollover pack is that it elevates customer experience. What more would we need than getting the remaining resources in our next pack subscription? This is even more relishing when we are traveling or need more data or talk time in a specific situation and we get the remaining ones from the previous pack when we subscribe to a new one. This will also offer flexibility to customers for their varying requirements of the data, call minutes, SMS in each billing cycle (month).
- Strengthens company-customer relationship: We don’t need to emphasize enough. Customers pay for services from the telecom company. However, not everyone is satisfied when it comes to quality of service, strength of the network, and tariffs. While such cases linger forever, there are tangible efforts a company can make to soothe customer experience. A rollover pack is such definitely. The fact that your mobile company compensates you with the remaining resources in your next pack purchase is such a convenience.

Disadvantages
While the rollover plan has all the benefits for the users, it adds a little complexity. You can find it difficult to understand the rolled over resources and the validity. Similarly, the telcos also need to provide the pack in the benefit of the customers while keeping their network free from congestion and get optimum result as the customers are not encouraged to go for higher volume packages. So, some operators even charge a little extra to apply rollover so as to compensate for their ARPU.
Mobile rollover pack in Nepal | Status and prospects
Ncell has announced for the first time to have launched a rollover pack. The private telco pioneered it with a Sadhain On pack on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, streamlining its service packs for customers. The pack ranges from Rs 99 to Rs 1499 in price and offers data volume of 1 GB to 1000 GB for 7 to 28 days.
Apparently, Ntc has been providing the feature from long time in various data packs. However, they have not yet announced to have initiated such rollover plan.
This is a great initiation by both the telcos in providing this innovative pack.
About 73% of households have at least a smartphone and with the expansion of 4G, more users subscribe to data packs than ever. But in the absence of a rollover pack, many users may feel that they are unjustified by having to forgo the resources after not being able to use up all the resources. Ncell though has introduced this industry-defining service and the state-backed Ntc has made it available on select existing data packs. Find: Latest Ncell data packs, offer and price
