The government has recognized Nepal Telecom (Ntc) for its profound contribution to disaster risk reduction. Sushil Chandra Tiwari, secretary of Water Resources and Irrigation presented the state-backed telecom giant with a letter of appreciation for its contribution to the early warning system. To put it into perspective, Ntc has been continuously sending warning messages about disasters for free from the DHM to the general public since 2073 BS through its mass SMS service that has proved pivotal in pre-informing the public and also saving lives during disasters.
Nepal Telecom received government recognition at the National Workshop on Early Warning System (EWS) held in Kathmandu on Thursday, March 21, 2024 (Chaitra 8, 2080). The company’s telecom gears across the country are used for communication and Dissemination purposes for the Early Warning System (EWS) conducted by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM). The department uses the infrastructure to collect information and disseminate it in disaster-risk areas. On the same day, Ntc’s major telecom competition Ncell also received a letter of appreciation for its contribution to the early warning system (EWS). Both companies provide essential contributions to the government in efforts to minimize casualties and save properties from disasters.

Nepal Telecom contributes to disaster risk reduction with its telco infrastructures
As part of information collection, connectivity is available through Nepal Telecom’s SIM card using Machine-to-Machine (M2M) technology to collect weather-related information on the central server of the Department of Water and Meteorology from the watersheds located in disaster risk areas such as floods and landslides. Nepal Telecom has provided a SIM card with a 300 MB data facility for this purpose.
For data collection, the DHM uses M2M technology with Ntc’s SIM Cards. Then, the department receives weather-related data at its central server from its weather stations installed in disaster-risk areas. For this, Ntc provides DHM SIM cards with 300 MB of data resources.
Similarly, the citizens receive possible risks pre-information through the 1155 code. For this, Nepal Telecom provides numbers of its customers in those areas to the DHM and is providing. The company charges no cost for these services. Check out: Important Numbers/USSD codes in NTC for Subscription, Offers
Ntc and DHM collaboration began in 2073 with the purpose of disaster risk reduction and helping save lives. As part of its CSR initiative, Ntc collaborates for this as one of its top priorities. The company has consistently played a key role in projects and programs that are beyond its commercial mobile and FTTH fiber internet services. And for a country like Nepal that is so prone to natural calamities, lending a hand with its resources and infrastructures is profoundly significant.
