Nepal Telecom has planned to launch 4G in Kathmandu and Pokhara in the month of Poush. First It will be in the major city areas of those two cities. After getting the 4G license, Ntc has been preparing its plan for the 4G roll-out. The completed roll-out plan is now submitted to the regulator, NTA. The license is on the condition to follow the roll-out plan for the 4G launch.
NTA claims that the operators have got sufficient frequency spectrum. The recent frequency policy 2073 also paves the way for technology neutrality in 1800 MHz band. So, the license awarded to Ntc is through technology neutrality in 1800 MHz. For which NTA had asked the government owned company to submit their plan for the service and network roll-out. NTA had also asked Ntc to tell the exact date for the commercial 4G launch, that means the date on which customers can actually get the hands on with 4G network. Ntc mentions Mangsir 30 for the exact date of the 4G commercial launch in the letter submitted.
From the day 4G news surfaced in Nepal, both the operators Ntc and Ncell had been telling us their readiness to launch LTE. LTE (stands for Long Term Evolution), is the technology name for 4G. As it is only Ntc that has got the 4G license first, they now tell us that they will launch 4G with in two months. We believed that the hardware and software upgrade in the existing infrastructure will not take much time. But as they may need to bring some hardware from abroad, the roll-out time extends to some more period. Once the infrastructure is ready for operation, they also need to test the 4G network and make sure there is no any problems before reaching the subscribers.
The picture below shows how the network icon is shown for 4G in the top of the mobile screen. Actually it is either 4G only or 4G (and LTE in the side) for the network icon in the mobile screen.
