Another phone scam in Nepal. How to protect yourself. Please be aware!!

After the resolution of fake red number calling, another phone scam has surfaced here in Nepal. With this scam, people  get a miss call from an abroad number with international codes like +21. Then after if you make a call to this number, your balance will be deducted heavily. Lots of people have gone to social medias for their curiosity. They even complained to Mobile operators for this.

Meanwhile both the major operators responded it as a fake one. They ask their customers to be aware by not making a call to these unknown numbers. They are also in the process to block those numbers.

Here is what Nepal Telecom and Ncell post in its official Social medias.

According to several reports, this kind of phone scam is known as Wangiri scam, originally from Japan.

What is Wangiri scam?

Wangiri, in Japanese means one ring and cut. Wan means “one” and Giri means “hang up” in Japanese. With this fraud, People get one ring call from unknown international numbers. These phone calls are actually made from auto-dialers to random numbers, mostly mobile. So if you make a call back to these numbers, your balance will deduct heftily, charging it as a premium phone call.

Now that this scam has reached here, you have to be careful in being the victim.

What to do to protect yourself?

If you have got any such international one ring calls, and you thought of calling it back, you will be the victim of this scam. So never ever make a call to these numbers to protect yourself. You can also search for these numbers online, if it is one of those phone scam numbers.

Most of the time, people here have found Tunisian number to be the fake caller, with +21 code. But there may be other countries number as well, so you have to ignore these unknown international miss calls.

Meanwhile, operators are also trying to block these numbers to protect their subscribers for falling prey to these international frauds. Till then, you have to protect yourself by not calling back to unknown international numbers.
