Nepal Government will soon ban porn sites in the country. Ministry of Communication and Information technology (MOCIT) has instructed the regulator NTA to ban porn websites. After which, porn websites along with the sexually offensive/indecent content in the web will not be viewable in the country.
NTA is the body for the regulations of websites in the country. The provision in the new Muluki Yen (Aparad Samhita) 2074 prohibits the broadcasting, distribution, publication of offensive sexual content. Also citing the increase rate of rape incident in the country, MOCIT decides to block all such contents and websites. They also feel that the easy sexual content access to increase the sexual violence in the country.
The digital media and internet easily distribute such sexual contents. So they instructed NTA to stop the digital distribution and ban such websites inside the country.
Ministry also requests all the Internet service providers, telecom operators, social media operators, and Internet users not to distribute, publish and broadcast such sexual content in the country.
After the instruction of Ministry, NTA will also direct all ISPs, telcos, digital media distributors, social media to ban such websites and content. So, it will take some time for the ban to come into effect.
Although the rule will implement, people will find several ways to download and share such content through the web. Several VPN and proxy are available for free to view such sexual content in the web.
When we tried to open some of the popular porn websites, some of them have been found to block for some years. Whereas some websites are still operating freely. They have already blacklisted some of the porn websites. But the list updated had not happened from a long time. Browsing such page landed on a white background with the text:
“This website has been blocked as per NTA’s Policy”.
