Qualcomm has announced its latest flagship chipset, a new mobile platform dubbed as Snapdragon 888 5G. Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. unveiled the chipset at the annual Snapdragon Tech Summit Digital 2020. It is the successor to the popular Snapdragon 865 that ruled the 2020 flagship smartphones. Snapdragon 888 5G comes with major advancements and will feature interesting specs that will dominate the 2021 flagship smartphones. AI Processing
Snapdragon 888 Chipset takes a huge step in the field of AI. It comes equipped with the 6th generation Qualcomm AI Engine with the new Hexagon 780 processor. Qualcomm Hexagon 780 Processor features a fused AI-accelerator architecture that helps to offer the Qualcomm AI
Engine performance of up to an astonishing 26 TOPS (tera operations per second). It provides a three times performance per watt improvement compared to the last generation. The chipset has new 16times larger shared AI memory meaning that there’s up to 1000x improvement for hand-off time in certain use cases. Isn’t that impressive? It is also equipped with the 2nd generation Qualcomm Sensing Hub, which integrates a dedicated always on, low-power AI processor to perform tasks like screen awake, lift and activity detection, and audio event detection.

It is 35% faster than the previous generation with processing speed of up to 2.7 Gigapixels per second and one will be able to enjoy 12 MP Burst Photo Capture feature at 120 fps.

The chipset comprises of the first-ever ARM Cortex-X1 performance CPU that works at 2.84GHz, three big Cortex-A78 that peaks at 2.4GHz, and four Cortex-A55 low power CPU that clocks at 1.8GHz.The Qualcomm kryo 680 generates up to a 25% uplift in overall CPU performance and allows top frequencies of up to 2.84GHz. It offers a graphics rendering of up to 35% faster in comparison to its predecessors.

Why named Qualcomm Snapdragon 888?
The mobile platform was supposed to be named as Qualcomm Snapdragon 875. But the company named it as Snapdragon 888. So, what might be the reason for it?
The reason is pretty interesting, Qualcomm said during the keynote that number 888 is the most premium name possible. And the reason is As per the Chinese culture number 888 is the symbol of triple luck and brings prosperity. So, to continue the ongoing success of the mobile platform the company opted to go with the name Snapdragon 888.
Another reason might be that out of the 14 partners of Qualcomm, their 12 partners are China-based manufacturers. To ensure the adaptability of its flagship chipset with the ongoing US-China trade confontrations, they opted for Snapdragon 888.
