Nepal Telecom and Ncell, two leading telecom operators of Nepal, have started to offer free mobile data to use the Nagarik app. The free data offer has already come into effect. So, you will not be charged for any data usage when you access the Nagarik app from your mobile data.
Ncell started to offer the free data on March 1, 2020, while NT started to deliver the service from 19th February 2021. Also, NT has been providing free cellular data to browse various government websites.
About Nagarik App
Nagarik app is a digital tool initiated by the Nepal government on 15th January 2021. The app includes features like showing educational certificate, passport, Provident fund details, register PAN number, register complaint, and many more. You can obtain government information and some limited government services (for now) from the Nagarik app.
Nagarik app is easy to install. You can download the app from the Playstore or Apple store. Currently, it is in the testing phase, so you will find the beta version of the Nagarik app. Simply click on install to download the app.
The provision of free data service
The Nagarik app has been developed to facilitate people with online assistance to deliver some governmental services. The government plans to provide several governmental services via a single app.
To make it accessible to all citizens easily and free of cost, the government has directed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to make arrangements for the mobile service providers (MSP) to provide free data service to use the app.
With the introduction of such a provision, people will have access to the Nagarik app 24/7. They do not need to worry about data usage. People with low or mid-range income do not have to invest in the data to use the app. People of any background can have free access to governmental services from any part of the country.
Such a provision empowers the citizens and improves the e-governance of Nepal. It also acts as a building block in creating a smart city. With more people using the free governmental services online, it also promotes digitalization in Nepal.
In a separate news, Smart Cell users can now use Nagarik app using their number which was not possible before. We believe Smart Telecom will also provide free mobile data from their network to access the app sooner.
