NTC has contacted Apple for NTC’s VoLTE software patch to allow iPhone users to get Voice over LTE feature, Gorkhapatra has reported. The company is also working with several other companies (Oppo, OnePlus, Huawei, etc) to bring VoLTE to their smartphones.
NTC launched its VoLTE service on Monday to wide public attention. Just under four days, 1,37,000 NTC users dialed in to activate the service while more than 15,000 has successfully enabled the service who also received a free promotional package of 100 minutes voice calls.
However, the service is available only to a select few handsets due to compatibility issues that have left many intimidated, including iPhone users.
Since VoLTE requires both 4G compatible handsets and SIM, as well as the custom carrier software update, iPhone users are still out of VoLTE range for NTC.
According to StatCounter, Apple has a 7.73% market share of smartphones in Nepal. As of now, many iPhone devices are not compatible with NTC’s VoLTE, and worse there is no certainty as to when they will finally get it on their devices. But NTC has undertaken the initiative with Apple which may soon land the VoLTE feature on the device.

Why iPhone is Not Compatible With Ntc VoLTE?
Not all iPhones have the requirement for VoLTE functions. Even if iPhone users have 4G-enabled smartphones and SIM, they are not able to toggle VoLTE on their devices because of incompatible software. In addition to this, they also lack 800MHz frequency which has rendered them incompatible with NTC’s 4G network at some places.
As per Gorkhapatra, NTC has reached Apple via an email on Sunday calling on the American firm to activate the VoLTE and 800MHz band for NTC users in Nepal. It seems there are some Apple devices that work with Ntc VoLTE but there is some issue with it.

NTC’s Managing Director, Dilliram Adhikari said, “The company has made a query with Apple in the past too and received a positive response.” He also said, “the telco has written to the American company on VoLTE’s initiation in Nepal.”
Such issues had persisted even during the beginning days of 4G. NTC had to reach out to Apple to enable 4G to iPhones in Nepal.
The MD Adhikari has said all the 4G-supported smartphones after 2018 will likely get VoLTE support. The smartphone companies can add the software patch via an OS update to add VoLTE configurations on their devices.
NTC is actively working with various mobile brands like OPPO, Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus, etc. to add support for NTC VoLTE.
Compatible Bands of NTC’s VoLTE in Nepal
NTC’s 4G and VoLTE works on both 800MHz and 1800 MHz. Telecom operator mostly implements 800MHz for rural areas due to its better range.
NTC has advised the public to buy smartphones with both 800MHz and 1800MHz support to avail of VoLTE and better services. Read more on Ntc recommendation for 4G device mode and settings.
