Qualcomm will unveil their next SoC Snapdragon 898 with a significant GPU upgrade. The US company had launched Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G at Mobile World Congress recently but its successor would come with unprecedented graphical performance.
Qualcomm Snapdragon processors have remained the leading hardware for smartphones. Not just for cellular capability, but also for their graphics Snapdragon chipsets have remained a favorite for major phone makers. Currently, the semiconductor has Snapdragon 888 as its high-end SoC, but its next-gen chipset would arrive with a major bump in graphic prowess.

The news came after a Lenovo executive revealed on Weibo that the next-gen Snapdragon CPU, successor to Snapdragon 888, will feature a “greatly” upgraded GPU. It is in the news that Lenovo’s Legion 3 Pro smartphone will be among the first to carry this CPU beneath the hood.
In his post, he used the possible model number “8450” which could be the title for the next CPU. However, Qualcomm hasn’t officially confirmed whether this chipset would be called Snapdragon 898 or 895.
It is also noteworthy that there is no revelation about the supposed GPU power this chipset will come with. But 2022 could be the year for the Graphical units. Samsung which also manufactures Exynos chipset with AMD graphics will unveil their own. The race for the high-end chipsets with the premium GPU tag could indeed be interesting next year.
Snapdragon 898 With Three-Cluster Architecture
Snapdragon 898 will supposedly carry a three-cluster architecture. Its largest core will rock on the Cortex-X2. Meanwhile, the subordinate core will come with the Cortex-A710 and the small core will be based on Cortex-A510. The Cortex-X2 will bring in a 16 percent improvement in performance against X1. Gizchina quotes experts that it will score ” over 1 million points in AnTuTu.”
Snapdragon 898 will be available by the end of 2021. It is obvious that Lenovo’s Legion smartphone will debut with this ultra-powerful SoC. But Beyond, either Xiaomi and Samsung might arrive later with this chipset.
GPU is a major component of a smartphone. It enhances gaming performance and helps graphics-related apps perform smoother. Besides, it also assists user interface and 3D content on smartphones.
As the smartphone’s capability outgrows its predecessor each launch, CPU performance has become even more important. It will be interesting to see whether Samsung or Qualcomm gets the upper hands with their upcoming chipset releases as GPU will be the likeliest highlight.
