Xiaomi has become the no. 1 smartphone brand globally for the first time. The Chinese company has defied Samsung to the top position for the month of June 2021, the latest Counterpoint report states.
After its strong showing in the month of June, Xiaomi overcame Samsung and Apple both to grab the top position for the first time to become the no. 1 smartphone brand. This landmark position is attributable to its incredible sales increase in home, India, Europe, and Mid East.
As per the report, Xiaomi’s sales volume grew 26 percent in June 2021. Xiaomi is already the second smartphone brand in terms of shipment for Q2 2021, according to the Canalys report. The Chinese brand has close to 800 million units of smartphones sold since its birth in 2011.
While its sales improvement has helped it grow in the ranks, Huawei’s faltering smartphone business has also contributed in large. After Huawei lost its stronghold, Xiaomi has been the benefactor. In the world post-COVID-19, Xiaomi has made a strong showing in Vietnam, where Samsung has struggled to make its presence due to its supply complexities.
The Chinese company has also ventured into the premium handset segment during the same period. In the meantime, Xiaomi has upped their smartphone game by introducing premium handsets. The company has launched high-end Mi 11 Series and Mi 11 Ultra to compete with legacy competitors.
At the moment, Xiaomi leads global smartphone sales with a market share of 17.1 percent in June 2021. Samsung trails at second with 15.7 percent while Apple stands third with 14.3 percent.

Xiaomi Capitalizing On Huawei’s Woes
“Since the decline of Huawei, Xiaomi has made consistent and aggressive efforts to fill the gap created by this decline. The OEM has been expanding in Huawei’s and Honor’s legacy markets like China, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. In June, Xiaomi received further benefits from China, Europe, and India’s recovery. This was also aided by Samsung’s sales decline due to supply constraints,” Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint, said in a press statement.
Counterpoint report also remarks that Xiaomi will continue to maintain its strong foothold if the Vietnam situation does not improve for Samsung. It is clear that Samsung is the immediate rival to Xiaomi and there would be a fluctuation between the two in the coming months.

Xiaomi has become the no.1 smartphone brand for June. It must be noted that it remains the second if the whole quarter is brought into the equation. But it is clear that Xiaomi is now one of the recognizable brands in the smartphone industry capable of locking heads against the traditional giants.
