OnePlus and Sony have together announced that the upcoming OnePlus 12 will feature the latter’s new-generation LYTIA mobile image sensor for better camera capabilities. This sensor expected 50 MP IMX 966 sensor is developed to improve low-light photography on smartphones along with other enhancements.
“The new generation of Sony’s LYTIA light embodies beauty with light and opens up a new future for mobile imaging,” OnePlus wrote on Chinese social media platform Weibo. Photography capabilities are one pulling factor that determines buyers’ choices. And in that department, Sony has an illustrious profile. Its camera sensors fit into the world’s most popular and prominent smartphones.
OnePlus, a popular smartphone brand has seized a great opportunity by becoming one of the early birds to announce the integration of the new Sony sensor for one of its upcoming models.
Another BBK Electronics sub-brand vivo has already announced the partnership with Sony for the LYTICA sensor. The brand says that its upcoming vivo X100 series will come with a custom Sony LYTIA800 sensor. The brand has plans to feature the dual-layer stacked sensor on other flagship phones too.
The “stacked” characteristic of the sensor will allow more light through the sensor producing better low-light photos.

The Sony LYTIA sensor will produce better low-light images
Sony has earlier mentioned that it will use a LYTIA image sensor in 50 MP hardware. The 50 MP IMX 966 sensor will supposedly carry a 1/1.4 inch with 2-layer transistor pixel technology of Sony. These are similar to the ExmorT IMX 888 stacked CMOS sensor that came aboard the Xperia 1 V. in early 2023.
Recently, OnePlus 12 president Li Jie Louis shared some images taken from the OnePlus 12 on Weibo. He didn’t provide many details, but the images highlighted the better photography quality of the OnePlus 12 against the other unnamed device. The sharper and more details images are presumably taken with the OnePlus 12 camera.
The OnePlus 12 will get a triple-camera setup. There are reports that the model will get a 48 MP IMX581 lens for ultra-wide snaps and a 64 MP OmniVision OV64B periscope telephoto snapper which supports up to 5x optical zoom.
OnePlus 12 will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset under the hood. In other highlighting specs, the model will get 100-watt charging support for its 5,400mAh battery. We will bring more details when the device officially launches a few weeks later.
OnePlus 12 is launching in November in China followed by the global launch in January 2024.
