Alibaba has launched its new Artificial Intelligence (AI) model Qwen 2.5 Max available on its chatbot (Qwen Chat) and claims that it can beat the recent sensation DeepSeek and ChatGPT in performance. The new development comes at a time when DeepSeek, a Chinese made global headlines for its effectiveness despite coming on a low budget.
Alibaba says that its advanced large language model (LLM) Qwen 2.5 Max beats large language models such as DeepSeek V3, OpenAI’s GPT-4o, and Meta’s Llama. “Qwen 2.5-Max outperforms … almost across the board GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3 and Llama-3.1-405B,” Reuters quoted Alibaba’s cloud unit. That means that Alibaba AI chatbot is now more powerful and effective at handling user queries on a large range of topics with more precision.

DeepSeek forces domestic AI competition
It seems that the Chinese AI space has its own competition from domestic firms. DeepSeek V2 started a price war in China in May, 2024. It started at 1 yuan per million tokens that’s NRS 17.6 ($0.14). This forced Alibaba to lower the costs of its own cloud services by up to 97%. Baidu and Tencent have also made their own moves as the AI competition grows in the country.
Anyway, the Qwen2.5 Max competes with DeepSeek V3. And it’s very diverse in capabilities. It can generate text responses, video through text prompts, process audio, etc.

Competition growing and growing
It already looks like AI will be one of the largest topics in 2025. DeepSeek has already shown the signs and compelled American firms to act further. OpenAI says that it’s working on an even more powerful language model than DeepSeek-R1 while reserving praise for the Chinese startup. Likewise, Meta, Baidu, and other Chinese enterprises will also strengthen their AI development.
It’s more likely now that the competition will be between the US and China or among the Chinese firms. But one thing is for sure with more contest, more powerful and precise AI services are going to dominate the digital space.
