Nepal Telecom has launched a stunning 1 Gbps internet package powered by the next-generation XG-PON network standard. The company has brought two high-speed FTTH internet packages- 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps under this plan and each comes with unlimited on-net calls and daily data. Find all the exciting details, including the price of these packages below.
But first, let’s learn a bit about the technology first. If you were not familiar, XG-PON stands for 10 Gigabit Passive Optical Network which is different from XGSPON (10G Symmetrical PON) that is being used by other ISPs. So, with this technology, Ntc says it will theoretically be able to deliver up to 10 Gbps downstream speed and 2.5 Gbps upstream speed.
Ntc has raised enough curiosities for staying aloof from the speed war. While private internet service providers have brought beyond 1 Gbps internet, the state-backed operator stood quiet and continued bolstering its technology upgradation from copper-based ADSL to FTTH Fiber.
Currently, the company provides up to 100 Mbps internet packages which is almost a minimum speed package, a standard among the private ISPs. But despite lower bandwidth packages, the company kept increasing its user base reaching over the 2-lakh mark as it focused on fiber network expansion and upgradation. While private ISPs suffered from internet outages in its conflict with NEA, it only helped the company to earn more subscribers.
But now, the company is ready to mark its entry into the enthralling speed game. Nepal Telecom is breaking the ground by launching a 1 Gbps internet package with the next-generation XGPON technology. Just think of being able to download HD movies within a second, upload large files, and stream content with a breeze, that’s what a 1 Gbps bandwidth speed enables.

Get Unlimited Calls and Data
The premium 500 Mbps FTTH package includes unlimited on-net calls within the Nepal Telecom network. With this package, you also get 350 minutes off-net talk time plus 0.5 TB data volume per day.
The 1 Gbps premium fiber internet package comes with unlimited on-net and 500 minutes of off-net talk time. This package also includes a massive 1 TB of data per day.
In both the packages, one IPTV, CPE device, Set-Top-Box, and 300-meter drop fiber cable come for free. As for the cost, the 500 Mbps and 1 Gbps FTTH packages are respectively set for Rs 80,000 and Rs 1.10 lakh on an annual basis.
Ntc XGPON Fiber Packages | Voice (talk time)+ Data (per day) | Cost (annually) |
500 Mbps | Unlimited on-net, 350 off-net/0.5 TB data | Rs 80,000 |
1 Gbps | Unlimited on-net, 500 minutes off-net/1 TB data | Rs 1.10 lakh |
To subscribe, customers can dial 198, then press 1 and register an order for the package. The method for the subscription is just like for the regular FTTH service aka fiber demand registration process.
What is XG-PON internet? Why is Nepal Telecom choosing it?
XGPON is the next-generation development in fiber internet technology with the ability to deliver up to 10 Gbps Downlink and 2.5Gbps Uplink speeds. The speed looks too high for today’s requirements; however, it could be a need and more common shortly as 4K/8K video, AI, telehealth, etc. becomes more prominent. In Nepal, private ISPs such as WorldLink and Vianet are employing XPON technology for their network. Therefore, it’s an obvious choice for Nepal Telecom. Keep in mind that Ntc using XGPON is not symmetrical that is downlink and uplink have different speeds.
Currently, most internet service providers (ISPs) use GPON for their fiber net transmission. However, it’s only capable of delivering up to 2.4 Gbps downlink and 1.2 Gbps uplink. It may be good enough for many but not decent considering growingly different use cases for the internet. That’s where XGPON comes into play. It offers over 4 times downlink and 2 times uplink bandwidth in comparison to the previous-generation GPON tech.
By using XGPON, Nepal Telecom is not only increasing its fiber internet speed, but it’s also upgrading its FTTH infrastructure network to keep it ready for future upgrades.

In XG-PON, X refers to 10, G stands for Gigabit, while P, O, and N stands for Passive, Optical, and Network respectively.
Remember:
- GPON: Gigabit Passive Optical Network
- XG-PON: 10 Gigabit Passive Optical Network
- XGS-PON: 10 Gigabit Symmetrical PON
At the moment, Ntc’s 1 Gbps FTTH package is available for Kathmandu Valley only. The company believes that enterprises will be befitted by this milestone speed package.
