It’s just the third month of 2022 and there are ample Flagship phones already. The key players of the smartphone market don’t seem to stop with just one particular flagship model. Running up the race today are Xiaomi 12 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22. Let’s find which flagship offering is better.
Xiaomi 12 Pro vs Samsung Galaxy S22 Design and Display
Design-wise, Xiaomi has gone with a rounded frame, back curvature, and smaller size. Looking different from its predecessor, Mi 11, the brand has tended to uplift ergonomics. As a result, the rounded frame looks more comfortable to hold. Meanwhile, Samsung has derived a similar design language to the Galaxy S21. Here too, the frames are rounded. The camera module still sits on an island integrated with the frame. Also, it has the Gorilla Glass Victus plus protection on the back. Xiaomi 12 Pro doesn’t mention it on its back.
On the front side, both of the phones provide AMOLED displays with variable refresh rates (LTPO). Xiaomi has a bigger screen, a 6.7-inch 120Hz panel with Quad HD+ resolution having a peak brightness up to 1500 nits. Further, the display also supports HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision as well. While Galaxy S22 houses a compact 6.1-inch 120Hz panel with Full HD+ resolution. It is also an HDR 10+ certified display. The peak brightness is 1300nits on this one. For protection, Xiaomi has Gorilla Glass Victus while Samsung has opted for Gorilla Glass Victus Plus.

Customers are also focused on optics these days. Both of the phones are featuring pretty capable optics here. Xiaomi 12 Pro flaunts a triple camera setup with 50MP resolutions for all three lenses. The primary shooter is a 50MP with f/1.9 aperture with dual pixel PDAF and OIS. It can shoot up to 8K at 24fps and 4K at 60fps. Following is a telephoto camera with f/1.9 50MP resolution. It is capable of 2X optical zoom and also aids in capturing depth in portrait mode. Meanwhile, the 50MP ultrawide sensor has an f/2.2 aperture and 115° FOV. The front shooter is a 32MP one for ultra clear selfies. It can capture videos at 1080p 60fps max.
On the camera department, Samsung Galaxy S22 also boasts a triple camera setup. Here, the main camera is a 50MP one with an f.1.8 aperture with dual pixel PDAF and OIS for stabilization. It can also capture 8K video at 24fps and 4K at up to 60fps. The telephoto lens is a 10MP one with an f/2.4 aperture. It has 3X optical zoom and OIS too. For the 120° FOV ultrawide camera, the resolution is 12MP having an f/2.2 aperture. While there is no OIS here, stabilization relies on EIS. The front camera has 10MP resolution which can shoot up to 4K 60fps.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Software
Xiaomi has always been offering flagship phones with Snapdragon chipset in Nepal. The case was not the same with Samsung which always preferred its Exynos variant flagships. Now as Samsung has also brought Snapdragon variants of the S22 lineup to Nepal, the battle becomes against the same chipset, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. As known, the flagship silicon is not a cooler one in terms of thermals.
Xiaomi 12 Pro has a heat dissipation vapor chamber cooling to manage the heat. Samsung has not mentioned a cooling system on the Galaxy S22. Still, the initial testing reports showed no overheating on this device. For software, Xiaomi has the new MIUI 13 on top of Android 12. The MIUI 13 brings in various bug fixes and optimizations rather than in visuals and looks.
Whereas, the One UI 4.1 on Samsung is no less in terms of smoothness and performance. Also, the company has announced for providing 3 years of major Android updates and 4 years of security updates. Both of the skins have dozens of features and it depends on the taste of the user and personal preference.

Battery, 5G Bands and Others
As a bigger phone, Xiaomi 12 Pro has a bigger 4600mAh Li-Po battery than Samsung Galaxy S22’s 3700mAh Li-iOn cell. Xiaomi also excels at the charging speed with whopping 120W fast charging. The 120W charger can fill the battery in just 18 minutes as advertised. Whilst Samsung has retained the same 25W fast charging technology. Both devices have wireless charging and reverse charging support.
For 5G connectivity, Xiaomi 12 Pro offers 1, 3, 5, 8, 28, 38, 40, 41, 77, 78, 79 SA/NSA 5G bands. The count increases for the Samsung Galaxy S22. It provides 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 12, 20, 25, 28, 38, 40, 41, 66, 75, 77, 78 SA/NSA/Sub6 – SM-S901B 5G bands. Here, Xiaomi misses on mm-Wave bands, which is not a big deal for Nepal, as 5G is not here and mmWave is too far away.
The rest of the specs are more or less similar. Both phones have a stereo speaker setup. One on the Xiaomi 12 Pro is a quad one which is tuned by Harmon Kardon while Samsung S22 features a dual stereo speaker. As expected, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack on either of the devices. There is Bluetooth 5.2 and Wifi 6 support on both phones. You get an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance too.

Verdict
There is no doubt in the build quality, performance, and optics of both phones; Xiaomi 12 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S22. Both counterparts have flagship features and share the same chipset. So what sets them apart? Xiaomi 12 Pro offers a higher resolution Quad HD+ panel with 527 PPI as compared to the Full HD+ display of the S22 with 425PPI. For compact phone lovers, Galaxy S22 is a better choice with a 6.1-inch screen.
Xiaomi 12 Pro seemingly takes an edge in terms of camera resolutions. Empowering all three lenses with 50MP resolution, we can expect better picture quality and output. Meanwhile, Samsung’s cameras can’t be underestimated. It goes head to head against Xiaomi for the main camera. Also, Samsung’s camera optimization is known to be better in the competition. Given the same chipset, ISPs are powerful on both phones. So, there should not be a drastic difference in the results.
