Today (Friday, May 24, 2024), major internet service providers ISPs’ internet suffered disruption in the afternoon which has been largely restored. The partial outage resulted in internet users of WorldLink, Vianet, and other top ISPs getting dismal broadband performance or slow internet to be clearer.
During the afternoon, Airtel’s fiber suffered breakage near the Sunauli border areas. Airtel accounts for 70% of internet bandwidth in Nepal. So, practically it plays a hugely significant role in Nepal’s internet landscape.
It has been said that the cut to the fiber cable of Airtel on the Indian border resulted in a sluggish network. “Fiber line was cut on the Indian soil. Other upstream providers’ fiber lines were also cut. We don’t know the reason why they were cut,” a technician told Bizmandu. He also said that recovery would take some hours for complete restoration. However, at the moment, the network seems up and running.
After poor internet was felt across most users, WorldLink and other ISPs confirmed it. They said that the maintenance was underway and restoration would only take hours. This is what WorldLink said regarding today’s short internet disruption:
It’s working now though!
This is the speed I am getting on Fast.com at around 8:00 PM on my 150 Mbps connection. Since it’s a 2.4 GHz band connection, this is almost the ideal speed I get and that means, the internet is largely back to its full capacity. Internet suffered another disruption but was restored soon
Thankfully, the internet disruption didn’t last too long. It’s easy to guess that many might have guessed that the issue had something to do with the ISPs not paying Airtel. This was the case a few days ago when the entire country saw an internet outage.
Earlier on Thursday, May 02, 2024, Airtel and other Indian bandwidth providers stopped bandwidth supply to Nepali ISPs. This resulted in the internet shutdown across the country which took hours to come back. ISPs blamed the government for not allowing foreign currency recommendations which barred them from paying Indian upstream providers. Nepali internet providers have Rs 3 billion due to pay. The incident caused intense conflict between ISPs and the government of Nepal. The service was restored after around 6 hours though.
However, this was not the case today nor a complete shutdown. Due to fiber cable cutting, internet service was disrupted. Thankfully, the maintenance was swift and the internet came to restoration during the day.
