MediaTek Dimensity 6400 launched for affordable 5G phones

MediaTek Dimensity 6400

MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 6400 chipset, a successor to Dimensity 6300. The new processor comes with some improvements and clocks to 2.5 GHz while also supporting 5G connectivity. Budget Android phones will use this chipset in 2025.

The Dimensity 6400 is built on TSMC’s 6nm fabrication process. So, while it’s not as advanced as a 3nm build Dimensity 9400, there’s no denying that it’s powerful enough to run affordable phones smoothly.

MediaTek Dimensity 6400 Features

Dimensity 6400 has eight cores. It has two Arm Cortex-A76 cores that clock at 2.5 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores that run at 2.0 GHz. If you can recall, these are similar setups to Dimensity 6300 and Dimensity 6100+. But the clock speeds are higher on the latest silicon. Graphics-wise, the processor pairs with Arm Mali-G57 MC2. It supports LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage.

Among other features, the chipset supports up to 108 MP cameras, 5G, 120 Hz refresh rate, and a Full HD (1,080×2,520 pixels) display.

In terms of 5G capability, the chipset has a 3GPP Release-16 compliant 5G modem. So, it supports up to 3.3 Gbps download speed. Although, it will be hard to get such high speed in real-world situations. Additionally, it supports both 5G Sa and Nsa architecture, 4G LTE, and legacy networks. For wireless communication, the chipset has support for dual-band WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.2, etc.

Smartphone brands that will use Dimensity 6400

Realme P3x 5G uses MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chipset. Besides, many other Android OEMs such as Xiaomi, vivo, and OPPO, could be in line to use the entry-level processor for their upcoming budget smartphones in 2025.

Conclusion

Dimensity 6400 chipset further democratizes 5G connectivity. A few years back, 5G was a new technology that was exclusive to flagship phones. To 2025, 5G is more of a standard issue, and many phones even in the budget range are likely to have them. So, as the smartphone industry evolves, 5G could soon come with default cellular support and we need to thank chipsets like Dimensity 6400 for this.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
