TikTok and Election Commission partner to ensure integrity

TikTok Election Commission Nepal partnership Falgun 21

TikTok has partnered with the Election Commission, Nepal (ECN), to ensure integrity for the general elections on Falgun 21. The two formally signed and exchanged a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize their cooperation.

The initiative comes as part of TikTok’s commitment to extend its hand for government cooperation. It’s one of the promises the social media giant has made for Nepal since its unban back in 2024. The partnership with the ECN aims at ensuring fair, healthy, and responsible use of TikTok around the Falgun Elections. Here, you can check out the election code of conduct for the Falgun 21 elections.

Getting started already, a TikTok delegation conducted a capacity-building Election Integrity Workshop. Its sole focus was on “promoting responsible digital engagement, combating misinformation, and strengthening understanding of election integrity among key stakeholders.”

The workshop provided an insight to ECN officials on how TikTok makes an effort to protect electoral processes on its platforms. The delegation also related to the government officials on the platform’s Community Guidelines and policies on misinformation, political content, and deceptive behaviors.

The attendees also learned about TikTok’s tools and features that help access reliable information and report violations. The workshop also relayed information on how to better understand how election-related content is handled and managed on the platform.

TikTok and the Election Commission cooperate to maintain integrity and fairness

TikTok’s idea to cooperate with the Election Commissions is to curb misleading content on its platforms that might affect the elections. Wrong information, especially with AI, has become common on social media, including TikTok. Therefore, it seeks to filter out the fake and false content that might impact the political parties and candidates.

“Elections are a critical moment for any democracy, and TikTok recognizes its responsibility as a platform that helps shape public discourse. Through this partnership, we aim to support informed participation, promote election integrity, and provide a safe space for positive digital expression,” said Ferdous Mottakin, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations, South Asia at TikTok.

“The Election Commission welcomes this collaboration with TikTok as part of our efforts to promote election integrity and responsible use of digital platforms. Partnerships like this help strengthen awareness around misinformation and support informed participation during the electoral process,” said Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, Joint Secretary and Spokesperson, Election Commission, Nepal.

TikTok says that it will continue to collaborate with ECN for the Falgun 21 elections to ensure integrity and safeguard the right environment for Nepali communities. The company further adds that, as a globally leading platform, ensuring election integrity is key to upholding user trust, minimizing the risk of misinformation, and supporting healthy and fair civic participation in the democratic process.

Being a technophile, I am particularly fascinated by the evolution of mobile networks in Nepal from legacy networks (2G, 3G) to 4G (with VoLTE, VoWiFi, eSIM) and the prospects of the upcoming 5G, and equally enthralled by the development of internet from the dial-up connection to the 2 Gbps XGS-PON fiber broadband technology and their transformative impact in the country.
