A report has emerged that claims that over 40% of Nepalis don’t use their own SIM card. Mentioned in the Global Findex Database 2025, most Nepali mobile phone users do use telecom services but don’t use SIMs registered in their name.
The report lists Nepal along with other countries such as Comoros, the Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Morocco, and Jordan, where a vast number of users use phones without SIMs in their own names.

The report itself mentions that users not having a SIM in their own name makes it difficult for mobile banking and other digital services. Therefore, telcos must also create a more robust system to encourage users to only use their own SIM. But they should also make the process customer-friendly.

The report mentions that the lack of financial capacity, complex registration process, and lack of documents could be reasons behind many not ‘bothering’ to buy their own SIM cards. The study found that the trend was more common among women and rural residents.
The reasons also translate to Nepal. Digital divide, lack of digital literacy, economic disparity, and registration process may compel users not to use their own SIM cards. However, the bigger picture is that it gives an easier route to scams and digital frauds.

The report has recommended an easier identification process, making devices available at affordable rates, and conducting digital financial education programs to address this situation.
