Apple Intelligence (Artificial Intelligence) features have debuted with the iOS 18.1 update on eligible iPhones. The update brings AI-powered enhancements to Siri, and the Photos app, and adds an ability to remove unwanted objects from photos, among other notable features. With this AI birth, the company seeks to not just elevate but also revolutionize user experience. In this post, we explore the best AI features Apple Intelligence is bringing with iOS 18 and iPhone 16 series.
What is Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence officially arrived for iPhone users with iOS 18.1 on Monday, October 28, 2024. Originally, the American phone maker announced its AI in June 2024.
With its AI, Apple is responding to Google and Samsung’s AI initiations that began with their Pixel 9 and Galaxy S24 series, respectively.

Major Apple Intelligence Features
With Artificial Intelligence onboard, users get a suite of writing tools, summation of email, suggested replies in messages, advanced search, higher-level Siri assistance, phone transcripts, etc. We are yet to find the complete logs on changes and improvements expected with Apple Intelligence. However, these are some notable and likely changes we are expecting.
In addition, users also get Image Playground where they will be able to create their own animated images. Apple’s custom emoji feature Genmoji will also come with further AI integration.
Siri gets GPT-4o integration
One of the key features of Apple Intelligence is GPT-4o‘s integration into Siri, the default voice assistance in iPhones. It comes with deeper integration with individual apps to make user commands more seamless and efficient.
Apple says that ChatGPT’s large language model AI enables Siri to check out calendars, and messages, and ask other questions based on recent emails and messages.
Essentially, Apple’s aim is to cater to users’ customized experiences. So, with time, Apple Intelligence will gather enough input about the user to deliver experiences specific to the users.
When Apple Intelligence is on, Siri gets an indicator notifying the user that it is active and listening.
Apple says that it uses ChatGPT only when it can’t handle user queries itself. That is, if you ask a very complex question to Siri and it can’t answer it, the phone will pass on the baton to OpenAI’s ChatGPT to serve you.
User data security
Now, this leads to one key concern with user data. As ChatGPT is to respond to user queries, it’s also supposed to get user data which it does. But Camden Woolven, group head of AI at consultancy firm GRC says that when Siri is using ChatGPT, Apple works to ensure privacy. Apple tries to use user data on the device or then encrypts it to Apple servers before it reaches OpenAI’s servers.
Also, you can not activate Apple Intelligence to skip any concerns with user data privacy from the Settings.

Apple Intelligence availability
Unfortunately, the perks of Apple Intelligence features are available only to select iPhones. This includes recent devices such as the iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the latest iPhone 16 models. This is because the AI features require highly powerful chipsets which previous-generation iPhones are not equipped with. So, the features will require at least an A17 Pro chipset.
This also means that future-generation iPhones will have the default ability to support Apple Intelligence.
