Apple has officially announced the iPhone 16e, the cheapest iPhone to date. The model replaces the iPhone SE 2022 and iPhone 14 and features some notable “firsts” including Apple’s C1 modem. Design and Display
In terms of design, the iPhone 16e comes with flat sides. It’s built on aluminum and glass. The front of the phone has a ceramic shield while the back is glass. According to Apple, the phone uses 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure. For comparison, it’s very different from the iPhone SE. There are no top and bottom bezels and a home button. However, the inclusion of the Action Button increases the functionality of the users. It’s designed to provide a modern look and function.
Notably, the iPhone 16e features a traditional screen notch so there’s no dynamic island. The back panel houses one camera on the left top and there’s an Apple logo in the middle. In terms of dimensions, the device measures 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm and weighs 167 grams only.
For the display, it has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. It’s an FHD display with 1170 x 2532-pixel resolution. It has a 457 ppi density which means the screen is sharp in details. The screen’s peak brightness reaches up to 1200 nits. But like the iPhone SE 2022, iPhone 16, and iPhone 16 Plus, the phone’s refresh rate is 60 Hz. The display unit supports HDR10 technology so visuals will be vibrant on the screen.
Performance and Storage
The iPhone 16e runs on Apple A18 chipset which is optimized for performance and battery performance. The chipset is built on a 3nm fabrication process. It’s also notable that for the first time, Apple has also used its own 5G modem- C1. Apple says that the modem will contribute to better battery life and offer up to 26 hours of video playback. The modem doesn’t support mmWave but will provide faster 5G performance.
The iPhone 16e comes with 8 GB of RAM and 128/256/512 GB of storage options. It’s understandable too. The phone is an affordable offering so, Apple offers the phone with 128 GB of starting storage while 8 GB is its standard RAM supply.
Camera
The phone only features a single 48 MP “fusion” camera on the back. Apple says that it’s a “2-in-1 camera system”. That’s because the camera features an integrated 2x telephoto which digitally converts a 48 MP wide sensor into a 12 MP telephoto. The camera comes with dual-LED dual-tone flash and supports up to 4k recording at up to 60 fps.
The front has a 12 MP camera an improvement from 7 MP unit. The f/1.9 lens should also help produce sharp and bright images. Just like the back camera, the selfie unit also supports 4K shooting at up to 60 fps and 1080p shooting at up to 120 fps.

Battery and Charging
Apple doesn’t reveal the battery capacity but it’s said that the iPhone 16e carries a 3,279mAh battery. It doesn’t sound much if we compare it to the other best phones out there. However, the optimization works shall do a better job with battery life on the phone. The phone does charge fast enough, 50% in 30 minutes. There’s no MagSafe charging but has Qi wireless charging support of 7.5W. The battery department saw some cost-cutting measures but the phone keeps its usability intact. The phone should last a day on a single charge with moderate use.
Software and Additional Features
Apple iPhone 16e boots on iOS 18.3 out of the box. However, the users should be able to update it to iOS 18.3.1 as it’s already out. The latest model comes with WiFi 6e support. There’s no home button for Touch ID so Face Unlock would be the security choice. The C1 modem offers fast 5G performance and is also good on the battery. It gets Bluetooth V5.3 and, a USB Type-C 2.0 port for charging and file transfer.

Apple’s iPhone 16e price in Nepal could start at Rs 125,000 for 128 GB. The phone may have a price tag of Rs 142,000 for 256 GB and Rs 160,000 for the 512 GB variants. The phone ships in black and white color options. The model costs $599, $699, and $899 for the 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB variants, respectively. Apple should launch the iPhone 16e model in the first quarter of 2025.

Our Verdict
Apple’s iPhone 16e is a cultural shift from the US phone maker. The phone seemingly phases out SE lineups, uses a traditional notch, and features an in-house modem. The phone is also revolutionary in photography with its fusion camera technology. And unlike other “affordable” offerings, this one looks more modern and functional. The drawbacks? There’s no ultra-wideband, thread, or Touch ID. Besides them, the phone is a capable device for its price range. You should also love this one for its ability to run Apple Intelligence AI features.
