Xiaomi announced the newest addition to the MIUI family, the MIUI 12. MIUI is Xiaomi’s custom Android skin. This new update incorporates some major features of Android 10. Furthermore, there are several aesthetic changes along with upgrades in privacy. Find the major features and the list of Xiaomi devices which will get MIUI 12 below.
The Major Features of the MIUI 12 update are as follows:
1. Sensory Visual Design
The first major change that MIUI 12 has brought is the new “Sensory Visual Design”. This simply means that within the settings app, core system information like storage will be displayed in the form of graphs and visual diagrams. This will make such information easier to understand and consume.
2. Super Wallpapers
Xiaomi has also announced new “Super Wallpapers” in this update. These are basically an upgraded form of Android’s “Live Wallpapers”. The company has worked with NASA to curate high quality and highly accurate 3D models of Earth and Mars. These wallpapers will act differently on the lock screen and your home screen. When the new “Dark Mode” is turned on, the planets on the wallpaper will also enter nighttime.
3. New Animation and Gestures
MIUI 12 also brings in a host of new animations along with new gestures. The new update will bring realistic weather animations and change the animations according to the weather in your area. There also new animations for deleting apps, closing & opening apps, charging, and many more. For instance, the following clip shows the new animation for changing from landscape orientation to portrait orientation.
MIUI 12 has also announced a new gesture that allows users to interact with their notifications without leaving their current app. For example, if you get a text message you can open the messaging app as a small window and move it around as you like.
4. Dark Mode 2.0
The Dark Mode 2.0 brings in the wallpaper dimming feature to Xiaomi devices. This feature will work according to the time of day and surrounding light to increase or decrease the brightness of your wallpaper. Also, this new update automatically increases or decreases the boldness and contrast of text making it easier to read in different lighting conditions.
5. AI Calling
Google amazed the world with the “Google Screen Calling” feature integrated within the Pixel 3. This feature allowed an AI assistant to automatically make calls and help the user with things like booking a hotel, ordering food, and many more.
With MIUI 12, Xiaomi’s in-house AI assistant Xiao AI is also capable of performing this task. Xiaomi is calling this feature “AI Calling”. Xiaomi claims that they have tested this feature with over 4 million test calls. Users will also be able to change the call state from automatic to manual. This feature, much like Xiao AI is currently only limited in Chinese territories with no news of it rolling outside of China.
6. Privacy Enhancements
Users now have more control over the permissions and data they provide to apps. They can choose whether to give apps permission only once or only when they are using it. If you are not using the app, it will not be granted permission in the background.
Also, users will get help keeping track of app behavior in MIUI 12. You will get information on how an app behaves and what information it collects in one screen. You will also be given a notification when an app uses sensitive information like location.

Every new MIUI release goes through several stages before the Global Stable ROM is rolled out to users, namely the alpha ROM, the China Beta ROM, the China Stable ROM, and finally the Global Stable ROM.
I have been a Xiaomi user for a long while now and one of the most irritating things about MIUI is how heavy it is. It is filled with a lot of bloatware and unwanted ads. Apps like Mi Video also send you inappropriate notifications. I would suggest Xiaomi look into these matters and solve them in future updates.
