eSewa 17th anniversary and new features

Nepal’s leading digital wallet eSewa has marked its 17th anniversary with a special event in Kathmandu. The company, first launched in 2009 in a beta version, became fully functional in 2010 January 25, and to date, continues to lead Nepal’s digital transaction landscape with example. It has added three new features to celebrate its latest anniversary- talkback, intent-based payment, and circle chat. We have more details on all of these below.

  • eSewa was launched in a beta version in 2009
  • Full version started on January 25, 2010

With the guiding theme of All, Always, Together (Sabai, Sadhain, Sangai), the company has been providing easy, safe, and accessible payment services. Using eSewa, you can pay your utility bills, book a bus, flight, and movie tickets, book a hotel room, buy insurance, and pay for many other services. You can also top up your mobile balance on eSewa and also buy data packs in a few taps. It has become an indispensable force in users’ daily lives.

Will continue to make positive contributions and compete at the global level …

Speaking at a program organized on the 17th anniversary and Innovation Day, eSewa Chairman Parshuram Kunwar Chhetri said that as the leading payment service provider (PSP) in Nepal, they will strive to make eSewa’s services even better, safer, and more reliable. He said that eSewa aims at making a positive contribution to society by expanding digital financial services in collaboration with regulatory bodies, users, society, and all stakeholders.

Similarly, eSewa CEO Jagdish Khadka shared that eSewa has always been providing services with the main motto of moving forward together, including everyone. He said that the platform’s 17-year journey has enabled Nepali companies to compete at the global level. “Today, we are establishing ourselves as a fintech company that can compete at the global level. Likewise, we have taken this achievement not as a destination, but as a basis for future innovations. Khadka said, “Keeping the needs of users and the development of technology at the center, we are innovating every day, and we are firm in contributing to the journey of Digital Nepal in a more responsible manner in the coming days.”

eSewa adds three new features to celebrate its 17th anniversary

Making the eSewa celebration more exciting and meaningful, the platform has now added three new features. Here, we discuss them each:

eSewa Talkback

The feature focuses on serving the visually impaired users. It has become the first digital wallet to introduce the talkback feature in Nepal. It reads what is showing on the screen, aiding the users to understand and use the app more conveniently. The feature allows users to press a button, learn their name, and perform tasks. The feature is available in both Nepali and English. The company says that it expects the talkback feature to give users digital financial independence and promote inclusion.

Intent-based payment

eSwea’s intent-based payment makes the transaction process simpler and easier. It is a system that allows users to make fast, secure, and seamless payments based on their willingness to pay. In this system, the payment starts when the user needs to make the payment. After clicking on ‘Pay with eSewa’ on the merchant app or website, the eSewa app opens directly, or the payment is approved through device-level authentication (fingerprint or Face ID), eliminating the hassle of MPIN, password, or OTP. Thus, this reduces the problem of interruptions in the payment process and provides the user with a safe, convenient, and transaction-completion experience within seconds. It also saves time for the user that is spent on getting to the payment interface.

eSewa circle chat

This new feature gives users the facility to add users, create groups, split bills, send gifts, post comments, and send reactions. It removes the need to open and use another app to chat with friends after sharing a bill collectively. The company believes that this feature will make communication and transactions between friends easier, as conversations made in group chats will always be there.

As the leader in the mobile payment ecosystem, eSewa boasts 10.8 million users with 280,000+ authorized representatives, 560,000+ merchants, and a wide network of over 49 banks and financial institutions.
