OnePlus 12: Overview
The OnePlus 12 smartphone is the next-generation device in the brand’s iconic Android lineup. As a successor to the iconic OnePlus 11, the latest senior iteration comes packed with some noticeable upgrades in design and hardware. The model comes with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, a 50MP main camera, and up to 1 TB storage option. The device comes with a 2K oriental screen and offers medical-grade eye protection. With a peak brightness potential of 4,500 nits, it’s the brightest device on the planet far exceeding that of the latest Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 2,600 nits.
Traditionally, OnePlus smartphones are seen as the equivalent of Apple and while it’s a subjective perspective, the flagship model in concern here packs enough punch for an elite smartphone experience. Let’s dive in to get all the details you must know about this device.
OnePlus launched its “OnePlus 12” series devices along with its affordable model Oneplus Nord N30 SE 5G.
OnePlus 12 Design
The OnePlus 12 design carries the similar and iconic profile we are accustomed to. The device is built of ceramic glass and the frame is made up of aluminum alloy. The device measures 164.30 x 75.80 x 9.15mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 220 grams making it larger and weightier than its previous year’s sibling. One of the noticeable changes is that the hole-punch camera cutout now rests in the center which existed to the left on the OnePlus 11.
The rear side carries the same iconic design path with the circular camera being the center of attraction. The OnePlus 12 has a luxury watch-inspired triple-camera module headed by the 50 MP Sony LYT-808 sensor equipped with a wide ƒ/1.6 aperture. The module has a Hasselblad logo etched to the left. The OnePlus 12 measures 164.30 x 75.80 x 9.15mm (height x width x thickness) and weighs 220. grams. In China, the flagship model was launched in three color options- emerald (green), white, and black. But which color options will make it in the global markets is unclear. Traditionally, white OnePlus phones are not shipped to global markets.
OnePlus 12 Display
The OnePlus 12 boasts a large oriental screen that stretches a 6.82-inch. It comes with a 3D AMOLED flexible curved screen and has a screen-to-body ratio of 93.5%. The model gets a QHD+ (2K) resolution of 3,168×1,440 pixels with a per-pixel density of 510 PPI. The display comes with a Super Fluid LTPO panel which paves the way for better battery efficiency. Besides, the display supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and can show about 1 billion colors meaning it’s capable of showing more authentic images.
Likewise, the phone supports an enthralling 1 billion colors. The now-common adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz lets the phone be smooth for scrolling while also saving vital battery life. Another highlight of this phone is that it reaches the peak brightness of 4,500 nits making it the brightest ever smartphone display to date. But the device performs with 1600 nits of brightness in regular conditions. Anyway, we are not taking anything away from the eye-popping brightness capacity of this phone. Credit where it’s due.
The screen uses a PWM feature at 2160 Hz that reduces eye strain for the user. The eye protection mode activates by default. The IP65 rating keeps away water and dust. OnePlus says that the OnePlus 12 features medical-grade all-round healthy eye protection with 6 different eye protection modes. Apple iPhone 15 and Samsung Galaxy S23 phones come with an IP68 rating. So here, the OnePlus 12 could have gotten better. But still, an IP65 is not an undervalue in all regular conditions. Overall, the OnePlus 12 has a display that you would expect on a premium phone with its peak brightness stealing the show. The Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 gives the device protection from falls.
OnePlus 12 Chipset
The Chinese launch confirms that OnePlus 12 uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. The 4nm mobile platform comes in a 1+5+2 architecture with a Cortex-X4 core delivering up to 3.3 GHz computation power for high-performance assignments. The other five Cortex-A720 cores max out at 3.2 GHz to keep the device in balance while the two Cortex-A520 cores clocking at 2.3 GHz give the phone its power efficiency. There’s no overclocked version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset for the OnePlus 12 as there’s one for the Galaxy S24 UIltra. The SD8G3 SoC is paired with the Adreno 750 GPU to handle all the graphics-related tasks. The company claims that the CPU delivers a 30% CPU performance improvement, 25% GPU, and 98% NPU efficiency increase.
The OnePlus 12 is a flagship-grade phone with a premium processor so you won’t find any sluggishness in gaming and multi-tasking. Everything should run a breeze with the combination of a high-end processor and memory.
Next-level gaming
The company says that it has upgraded the super-frame and super-picture engine to render high frames and high-quality images. So, after turning on the super-frame and super-picture engine, the frames will increase to 120fps, and pictures will reach 2k super-resolution. To achieve this HyperRendering on the device, OnePlus collaborated with Pixelworks. As a result of this cooperation and results, you will experience an ultra-realistic and immersive gaming experience on the phone.
Quite interestingly, the phone also features a small window mode which lets you check up on the game status in real-time on your desktop without entering the game.
OnePlus 12 Camera
The OnePlus 12 comes with a triple camera on the back with the main shooter being a 50MP Sony LYT-808 with a wide ƒ/1.6 aperture. It’s accompanied by a 64MP OmniVision OV64B telephoto sensor which boasts 3x optical zoom and optical image stabilization (OIS) to snap stable images. The 48MP Sony IMX581 ultra-wide-angle camera with a 114° field of view and macro capability at 3.5cm completes the camera configuration on this device. The ultra-wide camera lets you take landscape images with rich details. There is also support for 6x optical zoom and an incredible 120x digital zoom. If you don’t know, optical zoom lets you zoom in without losing minor details. Takeaway: OnePlus 12 is the first smartphone to use the flagship Sony LYT-808 sensor.
With the rear camera, you can record up to 8k videos at 24fps while you can shoot 1080p HD videos at 60fps and 30fps. The device also lets you shoot Dolby Vision shooting in 4K resolution at 30fps. There are time-lapse and multi-view shooting among other camera modes.
On the front side, the OnePlus 12 gets a large 32 MP selfie shooter with a ƒ/2.4 aperture in the center. The larger megapixel specs mean the camera can produce richly detailed images even from the front. With this camera, you get better night mode shots, AI ID snaps, time-lapse photography, etc. Video-wise, you can record 4k at 30fps, 1080p at 30fps, and 720p videos at 30fps. You can benefit from the selfie camera for excellent video calls, shoots, and selfies.
OnePlus 12 RAM and ROM
OnePlus 12 doesn’t compromise in RAM and storage offering which is an excellently befitting practice on the top-tier phone segment. The OnePlus 12 comes with the basic RAM of 12 GB, then the “modest” 16 GB, and then the incredible 24 GB RAM. Talk about the superlatives. And for the storage options, the 12 GB RAM is available with the starter 256 GB internal storage. The 16 GB RAM is paired with 512 GB and 1 TB ROM, and the juggernaut 24 GB RAM comes mated to the 1 TB storage. We are talking about the LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage technology here. Unfortunately, though, it seems almost confirmed that the 24/1 TB variant of the OnePlus 12 will be limited to China only.
The organic and linear RAM/ROM offering is practical as well as sensitive. From the raw perspective of specs, there won’t be any worry in multi-tasking and running graphics-heavy tasks. The 24 GB variant will be an overkill but a game-changing precedent for upcoming flagship phones down the years. The company claims that the modern tech-inspired storage system maintains its speed even after 4 years. But whether the bumped-up RAM/ROM makes it for the global markets is still unknown. As should be obvious, there is no option for a microSD card slot for storage expansion as the space is utilized to make room for the internals.
OnePlus 12 Battery
The OnePlus 12 comes with a 5,400mAh larger battery and supports 100W wired “super” flash charging and 50W wireless charging (aka AIRVOOC). As the company claims, the phone takes only 26 minutes to completely charge the device to 100% while wirelessly, it would take just 55 minutes. It’s claimed that the battery capacity will stay over 80% even after 1600 charge and discharge cycles so even after four years of use, the battery will remain solid. Thanks to the SUPERVOOC S power management chip, the discharge efficiency has improved to 99.5% making the battery more long-lasting.
OnePlus12 Connectivity
The OnePlus 12 features all the standard cellular and wireless communications such as 5G and WiFi. Actually, OnePlus 12 is one of the first and very few devices to support WiFi 7. In a more practical term, it supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/, WiFi 6 and WiFi 7. Additionally, it supports dual-band WiFi connectivity and WiFi Direct also makes the cut. Further, it has Bluetooth 5.4, A2DP, Low Energy (LE), and aptX HD support. There is an NFC and an IR blaster. For cellular connection, the device supports in addition to 5G, 4G LTE, WCDMA, 3G, 2G, etc.
OnePlus 12 boasts an aerospace-grade heat dissipation
The OnePlus 12 exploits the aerospace-grade Tiangong cooling system Pro to maintain the heat. The 9,140mm² VC (Vapor Chamber) cooling system covers an incredibly large area of 38,547mm². Likewise, a new generation of aerospace-grade thermal gel has been used with improved thermal conductivity of 30% to allow the chipset to perform consistently.
OnePlus 12 Android OS
OnePlus 12 runs on the latest Android 14 with OxygenOS 14 on top. In China, the phone gets the ColorOS 14 treatment. The predecessor OnePlus 11 is guaranteed four major Android OS upgrades and five years of security patches. The trend shall continue with the OnePlus 12 as well. The OS updates keep smartphones fresh and tighten security.
