Nepalgunj Metropolitan City is to set up free WiFi zones in various parts of the city. The project will move ahead in phases. In the beginning, the local body will establish seven free WiFi zones for the public at squares (chowks).
The local government is bringing its free WiFi service in coordination with the internet service provider (ISP) WorldLink Communication. The city’s mayor Prashant Bista inaugurated the initiative on Tuesday, 31 January.
At the event, he said that the free WiFi zone program will turn the city ICT-friendly and help people connect with the free internet in major city squares (chowks). The free WiFi zone is expected to be a landmark event for the city.
There is a plan to extend free WiFi service in all 23 wards of Nepalgunj.
Navaraj Sharma, head of Nepalgunj of WorldLink, said that the Free WiFi zone program has started in the main squares in order to make proper use of WiFi in difficult situations. He also shared that a portal has also been created to track the public and bring it into the system to prevent its unauthorized use.
To use the free WiFi service in Nepalgunj, people have to enter their mobile numbers for the first time. Then the facility will be available after a notification.

Where are the free WiFi zones in Nepalgunj?
For now, 7 different areas will have free WiFi zone in Nepalgunj. The service will bring free connectivity for broadband at the following locations:
- BP Chowk
- Dhambojhi Chowk
- Chaulika Chowk
- Setu BK Chowk
- Pushpalal Chowk
- Karkando Chowk
- Bheri Hospital area
The free WiFi hotspot service will help greatly benefit people in crowded areas where they can access the internet free of cost. The service will ensure they have connected in time of need with their close ones thanks to the city and WorldLink partnership. In fact, free internet access is one of the hallmarks to reinforce the digital inclusion envisioned by the Digital Nepal Framework.
