US phone maker Apple could be giving its two models- iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus a rebirth as it plans to relaunch them with USB Type-C ports. As the company needs to use Type-C port on all its upcoming models, the current-generation iPhones could also see their coming with modified hardware.
Currently, iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus sport Apple’s signature lightning ports. But the company is having to switch to a more universal Type-C due to the regulations in the EU.
Apple launched iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus in 2022 alongside iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max in 2022. All these models come with lightning ports. But as per a tipster, Apple will launch iPhone 15 series and iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus with Type-C ports in the next few months. The exciting possibility is shared by an X (formerly Twitter) user Aaron (@aaronp613). He said that the recent tvOS 7 beta released to testers is due in the coming weeks to have a reference to two iPhone models- “iPhone 14,4” and “iPhone 14,5”.
Additionally, the tipster claims that there were four models in the first tvOS 17 beta that were eventually removed in the last release. Apple to relaunch iPhone 14 and Plus models with USB Type-C ports
Apple’s Greg Joswiak has already confirmed that the iPhone lineups will come with Type-C ports to adhere to the common charger regulations in the EU. But the company hasn’t confirmed or provided more details about phasing out its lightning ports. However, some images have surfaced online possibly showing the upcoming iPhone 15 series.
Traditionally, Apple discontinues its Pro and Max models after launching their successors. And reportedly, the US smartphone OEM plans to sell iPhone 14 in the EU with the new common charger regulation coming into effect in 2024. But it’s not just the EU. Apple could ditch its lightning ports at home too as California’s recent law will mandate USB Type-C ports on electronics in 2026.
iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus won’t be the first devices from Apple to get their relaunch with a tweak in hardware though. In 2021, the company launched the original AirPods Pro with MagSafe-compatible charging case with AirPods Pro (3rd Gen). There are also claims that AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) will come with a USB Type-C in 2024.
